Chicago is a city with a diverse population, and the same can be said for its worker demographics. According to the US Census Bureau’s 2019 American Community Survey, approximately 41.2% of people in the labor force were White, 25.9% were Black or African American, 9.3% were Hispanic or Latino, 6.1% were Asian, and 0.8% identified as some other race or combination thereof. The rest identified as two or more races (16%).
When it comes to gender, 54.5% of workers in Chicago are male and 45.5% are female (based on 2019 data). By age group, 23.4% of employed people are between the ages of 25-34, 23.2% are between the ages of 35-44, 17.5% are 45-54 years old, 15.7% are 16-24 years old and 20.2% are 55 years or older.
In terms of education level, 30.9% of workers have a bachelor’s degree or higher, 28.3% have some college (but no degree), 18.4% have a high school diploma or equivalent, 8.8 % have an associate’s degree and 13.6 % did not report their highest level of educational attainment.
Finally, when it comes to industry type – 24.7% work in the service sector, 21% work in sales/office occupations, 16.1% work in management/business/finance, 10.9% are employed in production/transportation occupations, 8.8% are employed in construction and maintenance occupations, 7.7 % are employed in education/health care/social assistance and 11.6 % of workers were classified as “other”.

Other large companies based in Chicago are United Airlines, Groupon, Chase Bank, Sears Holdings Corporation, and Allstate Insurance Company. The city also boasts a number of well-known universities that employ thousands of people including University of Chicago, Northwestern University, Loyola University Chicago, DePaul University, Columbia College Chicago and Illinois Institute Of Technology. Additionally there are numerous hospitals employing physicians and healthcare staff such as Rush University Medical Center and Advocate Health Care System.
The service industry is a driving force within the city’s economy with many companies providing professional services. Companies such as Deloitte, KPMG, Ernst & Young, and Accenture are some of the largest employers in this sector. Various technology companies like Motorola Solutions and Google’s Chicago office also employ a large number of people in the city.
The government is another major employer in Chicago; the City of Chicago alone employs more than 36,000 people. The Federal Government also has a presence in the city with numerous federal agencies located here including the US Department of Agriculture, Social Security Administration, and Internal Revenue Service. Lastly, many educational institutions hire teachers and support staff to teach students enrolled at these schools too.
