According to the US Census Bureau’s 2019 American Community Survey, approximately 49.8% of the population in the Las Vegas area were White, 13.4% were Black or African American, 31.8% were Hispanic or Latino, 7.6% were Asian, and 0.8% identified as some other race or combination thereof. The rest identified as two or more races (13.5%).
In terms of gender, 50.5% of workers in Las Vegas are male and 49.5% are female (based on 2019 data). By age group, 26.5% of employed people are between the ages of 25-34, 24.5% are between the ages of 35-44, 19.5% are 45-54 years old, 14.6% are 16-24 years old, and 14.8% are 55 years or older.
When it comes to education level, 21.3% of workers in Las Vegas have a bachelor’s degree or higher, 25.3% have some college (but no degree), 27.8% have a high school diploma or equivalent, 11.9% have an associate’s degree, and 10.8% did not report their highest level of educational attainment.
In terms of industry type, 20.9% work in the hospitality sector, 17.8% work in retail, 14.7% work in healthcare, 13.1% work in accommodation and food services, 9.6% work in professional services, 6.2% work in construction, and 17.7% of workers were classified as “other”.
Las Vegas is home to several of the largest employers in the state of Nevada, including MGM Resorts International, Caesars Entertainment, Las Vegas Sands Corp., and Wynn Resorts. Other prominent companies based in Las Vegas include Zappos, Switch, and Aristocrat Technologies. The city is also home to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) which employs thousands of people. Additionally, there are numerous hospitals and healthcare systems employing physicians and healthcare staff such as Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center and Valley Health System.
Professional services are also a crucial sector in the Las Vegas economy, with companies such as Deloitte, PwC, and EY being among the largest employers in this sector. A number of technology companies like Google and Amazon have also established significant operations in the city, providing employment to thousands of people.
The government is another major employer in Las Vegas, with the City of Las Vegas alone employing more than 3,000 people. The State of Nevada also has a presence in the city with numerous state agencies located here including the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation, the Nevada Department of Transportation, and the Nevada Department of Health and Human Services. Lastly, many educational institutions hire teachers and support staff to teach students enrolled at these schools too.
